Vacancy Sport & Life skills project for Hope, South Africa General project information Project name: Sports & life skills project for Hope Sports Outreach Project type (practical/research/policy): practical Intended for interns from following study fields: Sport, Recreation, Movement & Social Work Total project duration: ongoing Preferred starting period: flexible Number of students required: 2 Project description Background of the project: Hope is a partial care, step-down facility for up to 12 children who are affected by HIV, AIDS or TB. It is situated on a six hectare plot near Rooidakke in Grabouw and, since its opening in April 2009, has provided a home for almost 60 children while working with their families to successfully place them back home or into alternative full time care. In addition to the provision of respite care to children, we are also involved in the development of the local youth through sports clubs. We are in partnership with Sports Trust to facilitate the after school youth clubs and coach the children in SAQ, sport and life skills. Sports Trust is an experienced provider of life skill coaching to young children which falls nicely in line with the services that our Foundation provides in Grabouw. Problem statement: We currently rely heavily on interns, both males and females (preferably two at a time) to co-run our sports outreach programmes. Goal: Support disadvantaged children and youngsters in their social and physical development through life skills and sport programmes. Role of the intern/specific activities: We need interns to support us in the following: - To facilitate the after school youth clubs and coach them in SAQ, sport and life skills. - Coach after school youth club mentors to equip them to make a difference for the better in their communities. - To provide support to the lead coach, the coordinators and the assisting mentors. - Special activities - Soccer, Rugby and Netball coaching - Transportation of netball posts to different sites including farms - Support coordinator and assisting mentors Measurable end product (report/advice/development/product): To monitor, document, assess and report on the effects of SAQ, sports and life skills training on the youth of Grabouw.
