Vacancy Education in Community Schools Ghana General project information Project name: Community schools in Buduburam, former Refugee Camp for people from Niger (multicultural environment), Ghana Project type (practical/research/policy): practical Intended for interns from following study fields: Education, Psychology, Pedagogy, Social Work Total project duration: 1-6 months Preferred starting period: As Soon As Possible Number of students required: 2-3 students Project description Background of the project: The projectmanager started a school project in Kasoa – Buduburam community with a few less privileged children because he believes education is not only a tool for poverty reduction but a basic human right. He believes that all children have the right to education and this right should be achieved progressively on the basis of equal opportunity. The successful school project has about 40-60 less privileged children from the community. The school has been able to reach and educate 400 less privileged children since its establishment in 2010. The school still needs means and support to bring out the best in the lives of the less privileged children that it serves. Goal: Volunteers/interns will have the opportunity to put their skills or ideas into practice to improve better ways of teaching children and to implement new teaching methods. To provide tutorial programs for staff to improve quality approaches to teaching Role of the intern: Volunteers/interns will design new educational methods and structures for the community schools. They will also provide tutorial courses and help teachers. All strategies/ approaches/schemes will be reported and discussed with head of staff before implemented. Specific activities: Volunteers/interns will: - Observe teaching in classes they will be assigned. - Assist teachers to assess best approaches to teaching and learning. - Instruct and train teachers in the school on possible effects on teaching and learning, how to organize or structure the classroom and new schemes for teaching - Help to implement new teaching strategies. - Enlighten teachers on how to assess children’s progressive report and provide a master plan to set-up these criteria. - Enlighten the Headmaster and staff of the school on how to organize effective time tabling and examine the children’s learning time. - Pinpoint motivational support for teachers in the school. - Organize talks on related health issues e.g. good hygiene, cholera, malaria, HIV/AIDS etc. - Ways of disciplining. - Organize extra curriculum activities e.g. music and dance, arts work, drama, sport etc. Measurable end product (report/advice/development/product): progress, evaluation and advice report. Educationalist/Behavioural Therapist and BSc. Social Worker), who is living and working in Ghana for more than 4 years. Workspace for intern: office is available on the school compound Introduction and guidance during project: By the field supervisor and Programme manager of Let’s Go Africa. Accommodation options: Interns will be provided with a homestay accommodation. Local food will be served twice daily (breakfast and supper). Intern requirements Intern characteristics/qualities: Interns should be flexible, confident and have a professional attitude.  Able to work with different cultures and accept different norms.  Can work independently and is creative.  Confident and able to create positive professional relationships.  Good organizational and interpersonal skills.  Able to adapt to different work environments and situations.
