Educational vacancy in Houtbay, South Africa General project information Project name: South Africa; Educational project Houtbay primary school Project type (practical/research/policy): Practical Intended for interns from following study fields: Education, English, Social work, Psychology Total project duration: continuous Preferred starting period: a.s.a.p. Number of students required: 5 - 10 Project description Background of the project: The organisation began eight years ago when the co-founder reached out to one boy who she had found begging on the streets in front of her estate agency. She learnt that he was illiterate and had dropped out of school. She teamed up with the other passionate co-founder in order to help this one child to become literate. Soon the number of children participating in the literacy programme grew to seven, and so the Houtbay Educational Organisation was born. Their passion for children and education finds expression in bringing literacy to children who had fallen by the wayside, equipping them with the skills to cope with their education and preventing them from dropping out of school. This passion remains a sustaining force for the organisation, which has grown from helping one street child to serving more than 300 children per year. Problem statement: Primary school students come from a community characterised by poverty, crime, violence and abuse to mention but a few. The environment the students come from combined by an overcrowded class in which they learn affects their interest and academic performance. These are children who, without intervention, would in all likelihood have dropped out of school functionally illiterate, innumerate and unemployable. Goal: To provide a small-group environment for learners who have fallen behind academically, in the key skills areas of English, mathematics and Afrikaans, so as to enable them to meet the required academic standard, build self-confidence and motivate them to stay in school and participate in after-school projects Role of the intern: Help in the implementation of the programmes the organisation is running. Give academic support to the students struggling academically, by taking them on one of one basis and assisting them in the areas they are struggling in. Test the level of the students’ performance at the beginning (measuring tools provided). Assess students’ improvement. Assist students to acquire basis skills to read, write and comprehension. Give students homework support Provide a report at the end of internship on the specific achievements Assist students in sport Specific activities: The intern has to keep record of all the activities they do with the learners. Towards the end of their internship they are to test the students they were assisting , to measure their improvement and have to give a report. Recommendations are also welcome so that the organisation can improve their performance Measurable end product (report/advice/development/product): An achievement and recommendation report is required at the end of the internship Roel van Hout (MA) General/Programme Manager Let’s Go (Southern) Africa T +31 (0)6 45197822 W www.letsgoafrica.nl E roel@letsgoafrica.nl Office address: Korhoenderveld 44 5431 HH Cuijk Chamber of Commerce: 60323310 BIC: INGBNL2A • IBAN: NL23 INGB 0006 3799 75 Visit our website| Like us on Facebook Facilities for intern Supervision on appropriate project field: yes Degree of supervisor: Education (specialized in remedial Education, speech and drama) Workspace for intern: Hout Bay Primary School, Cape Town, South Africa Introduction and guidance during project: Training is provided before the beginning of internship, intern can use our Students Manual for guidance and support is given continuously Accommodation options: Can be arranged in consultation with Let’s Go Africa Intern requirements Intern characteristics/qualities: Must have a passion and drive to help students Must be patient and able to work with students from different socio-economic background.
