Vacancy Learning Disabilities Ghana Visit our website| Like us on Facebook General project information Project name: Learning Disabilities Ghana Project type (practical/research/policy): Practical and research Intended for interns from following study fields: Education, Psychology, Pedagogy, Social Work, and Special Education. Total project duration: 1-3 months, 3-6 months and 6-12 months Preferred starting period: September, 2015 Number of students required: 2-10 Project description Background of the project: The founder who was a teacher realized in 2005 that a great number of children in the public schools exhibit learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity and teachers have very little knowledge and pedagogical skills to teach to meet their special needs. Consequently, many of such children drop out of school, work and sell at streets or sleep on the streets. In 2008 the founder decided to find a solution to this problem, so he went to study Special Education in University of Education, Winneba-Ghana and after his graduation in 2012 started a Campaign for learning disabilities. The project seeks to improve learning outcome for children with learning disabilities and to reduce school dropout among such children through teacher training, public awareness, parents empowerment, remedial teaching and in-class support for local teachers in teaching children with learning disabilities. Goal: School and teacher support to improve learning outcome, retention and completion rate for children with learning disabilities. The aim is to support and provide pedagogical advise to teaching staff in order to teach to meet the needs of children with learning and attention problems through teaching , remedial classes and in-service training for teachers. Role of the intern: To provide in-class support and special attention to pupils with specific learning and attention problems in the schools. Also the intern will help in training teachers about specific learning and attention problems; prepare a resource handbook for teachers and advise the local education office. Specific activities:  Assist in designing action research on inclusion of children with learning and attention disabilities and advise the local education directorate.  Help with workshops for local teachers and volunteers in local schools  Help in training of pre service teachers in three (3) teacher training colleges  Help provide in-class support to pupils with learning disabilities during teaching and learning  Help identify and document pupils with learning and attention problems in local schools  Help develop assessment checklist and teaching aids for local schools  Help children to be able to read, write, do mathematics and art work  Help prepare peer group for activities like peer tutoring and co-operative learning  Help local teachers to teach English Language, Mathematics, Science, Creative Art, and Citizenship Education.  Marking work, giving appropriate feedback, and maintaining records of pupils' progress.  Assist with basic office duties and writing of project reports. Social Worker), who is living and working for more than 4 years in Ghana Degree of supervisor: Graduate Professional Teacher, Special Needs Educationalist and Home Economist Workspace for intern: Office is available to work from to the schools/field Introduction and guidance during project: Orientation and guidance will be done by intern supervisors Accommodation options: Available in a host family/compound room near the project within the local community.
