Vacancy Education/Psychology/Pedagogy Ghana General project information Project name: School for children from the community (rural area) in Volta Region Project type (practical/research/policy): practical Intended for interns from following study fields: Education, Psychology and Pedagogy Total project duration: 3-6 months Preferred starting period: a.s.a.p. Number of students required: 2-4 Project description Background of the project: The founder (local farmer and pastor) started the school in 1991 with a few disadvantaged children from the local community, because he believes that education is the key to development. Today, the school has grown into a fully established Pre-/Primary and Junior Secondary School, educating around 300-400 children from the rural surrounding communities. Nevertheless, the school is struggling to perform with the lack of means and support from the government. Goal: School/ Teacher Support to improve the quality of education. The aim is to support and to advise the teaching staff in order to teach and implement new, additional teaching methods and structures in the school. Role of the intern: The task of the intern is to design, implement and monitor (extra) school curriculum activities, new educational methods and structures in the school. Besides, the intern will develop teacher trainings/training courses and guide and assist the teachers where possible. All new initiatives and processes will be discussed and reported to the headmaster, before presenting them to the staff. Cultural values and context must be taken into account! Specific activities: - Support school teachers to review and agree on criteria for quality teaching and learning; - Train, coach and advise teachers on different teaching strategies, classroom structures and appropriate learning methodologies; - Advise on the development and consistently use of new teaching and learning material (tlm) and aids; - Advise on library set up; - Advise on the development of individual learning assessment of all children in their class and apply strategies to meet these criteria; - Advise on the development of effective time tabling and monitoring to maximize pupil learning time; - Identify motivational support for teachers (e.g. exchange visits, attend extra courses, upgrade skills and award ‘teacher of the year certificates’); - Motivate teachers to identify, praise and share good practices among each other; - Introduce extra curriculum activities concerning Physical Education, Music, Dance, Drama, Arts; - Organise training courses on different topics e.g.; how to keep your environment clean/ hygiene, how to stimulate active participation, ways of disciplining versus positive stimulation, special needs/development delays and disorders etc. - Teach and support children with special needs/development delays in reading, writing (spelling) and mathematics. Measurable end product (report/advice/development/product): Evaluation, progress and advice reports and (hand-made) teaching and learning materials. Interested? Educationalist/Behavioural Therapist and BSc. Social Worker), who is living and working for more than 4 years in Ghana. Workspace for intern: Office is available next to the work in the field. Introduction and guidance during project: Introduction and guidance is done by your supervisors Accommodation options: Available in a compound room next to the project within the local community or in a guesthouse. Local food will be served 3 times daily at the project.
