Zanzibar HIV/AIDS project General project information Project name: HIV/AIDS Program. Project type (practical/research/policy): practical and research. Intended for interns from following study fields: public health, psychology, social work, sociology, research and any related field. Total project duration: from 2 weeks to 6 months (longer is also possible) Preferred starting period: any time. Number of students required: 1 to 6. Project description Background of the project: People and communities of Zanzibar have little knowledge and education on HIV/AIDS. This program is designed to support HIV/AIDS education including the detailed information about prevention of infection, how and where to get confidential and reliable testing on the island, and links to information on how to live and cope with HIV. Problem statement: communities in Zanzibar have very little knowledge and education on HIV/AIDS. Goal: To prevent new infections from taking place and to improve quality of life for HIV positive people. Role of the intern: engaging in local communities, providing HIVS/AIDS education, providing counselling to families and those affected by HIV/AIDS, participating in behavioural change campaign, testing people HIV/AIDS, etc. Specific activities: Giving people information about HIV - what HIV and AIDS are, how they are transmitted, and how people can protect themselves from infection, teaching people how to put this information to use and act on it practically - how to get and use condoms, how to suggest and practice safer sex, how to prevent infection in a medical environment or when injecting drugs. Measurable end product (report/advice/development/product): Outcome and progress reports. Facilities for intern Supervision on appropriate project field: available. Degree of supervisor: master degree. Workspace for intern: available. Introduction and guidance during project: induction program will be conducted on the project and volunteering life on Zanzibar. Accommodation options: Guesthouse in Stone Town. Intern requirements Intern characteristics/qualities: willing to help, reliability and good spirit. Fully self funded or reimbursement for accommodation & transport: fully self-funded.
